I'm growing increasingly familiar with True Temper, Plumb, and Sager as far as vintage axe makes goes, but what do people think of Vaughan? Specifically, I'm looking at this auction on eBay. Worth the money? Run screaming?

Well worth it, Vaughan & Bushnell has made excellent tools for well over 100 years, I don't like cleaned up axe heads but if you can get past it then a great tool is a great tool.
Sadly they no longer manufacturer any full sized axes though.

I have nothing bad to say of Vaughan or the Vaughan made axes I have.
Great steel, holds a sharp edge.

I think Vaughan's 'Value Brand' is the equivalent of Kelly's 'Woodslasher' brand. Likely 1060 steel like most current Council productions. I'd bet that Vaughan's 'Super Steel' axes are something like 1080 and I'd bet that Flint Edge axes are similar.

I'd really love to have the steel in a bunch of axes tested but I haven't found a company willing to do a batch at a reasonable price. Maybe it's something bunch of us need to cooperate on.

I will let you know soon enough. Got this one 2 weeks ago. I am going to have to rehang it, which is a shame the original handle is beautiful.

Nice vintage Vaughan. That dent in the eye may be a little problematic but worth the effort.

I've wondered about the same thing! I'm not sure what the cost is like. I've been interested in how the steel formulations changed over the years, too. It would be incredible data.

Yeah, it looks like it got ran over by a train. I didn't notice that until I took that exact picture. But I thought it would be good for conversation anyway. Not to mention I think somebody mistook their entire set of car keys for wedges. Should be a fun one to get apart.

I didn’t think about the correlations in steel between makers’ lines of similar periods. Ie. your comment equating Vaughan’s Value Brand to Woodslashers.

Woodslashers are quality workers.
Several of my go to users are full-bitted “Red Unmarked Ridge Eyes” (RURE’s).
They are also the ones I find most often around here.
