I wanted this for Xmas. Not only did I need a broad hatchet desperately :), I wanted to see what a new, made in USA Vaughn was like. This one varies from many online pictures in the new blue paint job (UK wildcats fans?), so I tried to take pictures. The camera used makes the paint look less perfect than it really is. It is right hand bevel (though I think you could flip the head for left hand use). Needs a lot of sharpening/profiling. Overall, I think it looks like a solid tool, and I look forward to using it.

If the quality matches their hammers then you have a first rate tool there. And I'd bet it does.

I have a Vaughan carpenters hatchet from the 90's, octagon haft. It lies in the heap of mis-fit tools of days gone by... I hope yours is of better steel. The one I have was bought by my dad, WILL NOT TAKE AN EDGE! When it starts to get sharp..the whole burr will break off, leading you right back where you started.

Great to have feedback from you both, thanks. I don't know much about Vaughn, but I was impressed they still made one of these here and wanted to give it a shot. Time will tell!

Golden opportunity to profile and hone the blade on this and take it out for a proper test drive. I wouldn't mind hearing about how well the edge holds up.

i have a vaughn I bought about 10 years ago re hafted to a longer handle works for me so far. the grind did suck though.

The Vaughn broad hatchet I have is probably close to 50 years old. Been using it fondly since I was a youngster. Nice tool. I would agree a longer handle would be nice.

Longer handle isnt out of question, but I'll give it a try as hafted first. It needs a lot of "grinding". I'm thinking of keeping the edge straight and putting a chisel-like bevel on it, or is that crazy? I want to use this one more for light hewing and large joinery type things than axe like chopping.

Once I use it for a while, I'll report back in case anyone is interested.

I have one of the small Vaughn sub zero hatchet that I got about a year ago. I could not be happier with it. It will take and hold an amazing edge. It took a little work to get it there. Once it was reground it performs awesome. I highly highly recommend it if you are willing to put a little work in.
