Had a good time at the Vegas Show and met a lot of the knife makers who's pieces I have been admiring &/or buying over the years. Also ran into a few people I've known over the years from the online knife community.

Overall I was impressed with the show but it was a tad smaller than I expected it to be. Many big names were there but a lot of people I expected to see were not. This could have something to do with so many knife events going on at the same time.

Thought I'd share a couple of pieces I brought home with me.

First is a piece by Hoss Knives. I had never heard of the guy before and got to talking to him only to find out he was Derrin Thomas, Devin Thomas's brother. Needless to say all of his knives feature Devin's damascus and were priced considerably lower than I would expect them to be.

This piece has a DT damascus blade and back spring, NS liners, Mokume Bolsters and Green jig bone scales.

Second is a piece by Gary Crowder. I have always enjoyed the one folder I have by Gary but had never met him. I spent a lot of time talking to him and found out I like him as much as I like his knives. His quality is very high and his prices amazingly low.

I'm planning on working with him in a couple of months to order another one from him. He had a 3 blade reverse gunstock on his table that I wanted to buy but it was in Blacklip and not something I would pocket carry.

The one I did buy is a two blade that I'd call a modified sowbelly. It has great filework, black jig bone and perfect F&F.

Overall the show was great, I wish I could have brought a lot more home than I did, but isn't that always the case ;)

It looks like you did really well for yourself. Both are fine looking knives.

How was the attendance at the show? If I had been down there I would have probably spent my time in Reno at the ABS show.

Thanks Keith.

Traffic for the 3.5 hours I was there was pretty steady and heavy at times. The hall was split with the gun show and one admission got you into both places, so there was a lot of cross traffic from the gun area.

I know because several times I heard someone say "who the heck would pay $200 for a knife?", safe to say those weren't the guys who flew 500 miles to go to the knife show ;)

Like any show some makers were either sold out or near sold out, I also had a few say they hadn't sold anything all weekend or very little.... but I know stuff was being sold as I saw a lot of money being layed down.

I enjoyed talking to the makers the most, buying the knives was an added bonus.

That Hoss folder is awesome. I don't have any traditional style custom folders and that fits the bill for me. They have a site?

TBG, he has a web page - but not really. It's just his logo and a picture of one of his knives. I assume he's working on getting it up and running.

His email address is darrin@hossknives.com, phone is 435.627.9152.

Hi work is excellent and prices are very good, all of the knives he had at the show were from Devin Thomas damascus, so I think he works in it almost exclusively... but who can blame him... ;)

I didn't know that Devin had a brother, and I thought that they called Devin "Hoss". I'm so confused....

Hey, nice knives BTW....you did real good.

Yep - he definitely has a brother, they look like bookends. But, I checked Derrin's business card again and his logo is Hoss2 (with a subscript 2), maybe they call them both Hoss?

Two beautiful looking folders. :) That damascus pattern on the Hoss is pretty cool. Have not seen a Crowder in a while and that one looks fantastic.
Congratulations cpirtle

The guard checked out my knife leaving the show and he couldn't believe that I paid $270 for Scott Cook Ohwhee large with beautiful ironwood scales.

I am not in the habit of being envious of other people's booty but this time I feel the critter tugging at my shirt sleeves!! :D :)

Great acquisitions.

He actually has 10 brothers. Darrin is his twin. They do call Devin "Hoss", so when Darrin got in to knife making, he called himself Hoss2, or something like that anyway.

Sorry to drag this one back up but I had an interesting experience with one of these knives and I just posted a related thread in GBU, check it out HERE, it's well worth the read.
