Last weekend I was up the beautiful buckhorn canyon riding my dirtbike in the mountains. And on my way down the canyon, I came across a truck that drove off the road and rolled about 20' down an embankment into a river driver side down. I came up on it and ran to see if anyone was in it. Luckily there wasn't, but it got me thinking on what if he/she was stuck? I had my bone collector 15015 on my hip and ready to use if need be. I always have a delica clipped to my driverside door panel, but that probably won't break glass if I needed it to. I'm probably going to pick up a triage so all my concerns are covered. What do you guys carry in your vehicle forreasons like this? I'm really glad they got out, and I didn't come up on a dead body.

A knife never really comes to mind for me other than as a seat belt cutter. I think I'd go with a prybar if I wanted an extraction tool.

I have two. A mini grip in the took kit, which has never seen use and a cheap Sheffield branded China knife from Home Depot that I keep clamped by the driver bay. It's a combo edge in case something happens and I have the wherewithal to grab it just in case I need to slash a seatbelt fast, it also has a somewhat pointy tip and metal scales in case I need to break safety glass.

I've got a custom made by Wolfs Creek Forge I picked up here, I call it my "Tank" as it's a stout little blade, but because of its small size it might not be the best for emergency extractions... It's over all is 6 and 3/4, and has probably seen more use than most of my every day knives as I use it to cut rope to length or hack at odd stuff to fit in the bed of my truck... It's actually got some nice patina going on right now. After reading this, I almost want to put something in my truck that will suit this need.

If you're not anti-battoning, I've battoned through the roof of a few derelict Hondas with a Cold Steel Tanto.

I already carry one, a mini one I made. .25" a2 tool steel 12" long, .625" wide. Didnt even think about grabbing it. I was thinking it would be a smash and grab type thing. If time is of imporatance, I'd rarher spend a few seconds smashing a window than a few minutes prying something...

Some time back, I picked up one of the Gerber Hinderer Rescue knives (blunt tip, fully serrated, cutting hook, glass breaker). I keep that clipped to the inside of the door. I also keep a Leatherman in the glove compartment.

I always have a knife in my pocket. I also have a knife in my go bag, my tool box, and my fishing tackle box. But what I keep in my cars for escape purpose are these (one in each car - the Lifehammer):

Prybar and a Benchmade Rescue Hook for these types of situations. Though I always have a folder of some sort on me as well.

I keep a German folding army shovel, an ax and a Blackjack Campanion in the car in case I need to pry open a tank or something.

Esee 5. If it can get a helicopter pilot out of a helicopter, it can get me out of a car.

I carry the knife, in a vehicle it can get lost or pop off it's clipped location in an impact.

"Help, I'm trapped in a car!" plays out badly - if you are injured, you won't be able to do much. If you are still physically ok, just unlock the seat belt and climb out.

Now, go ahead, play out all the speculative scenarios, under water, jammed buckle, gas tank is dripping, immiment fire, whatever. Not. The #1 thing that happens is a collision with another car at speed, the air bags go off, you're stunned.

What will the knife do to help then? Nada. Sit quietly and don't make your injuries worse. Likely won't because you'll be unconscious.

For all those who want to weigh in with "What IF?" please do us the favor of citing the exact percentage of accidents that actually occur under those circumstances. I dare you to find any that are more than one digit before the decimal. I doubt you can, but if there are any, at least your point will have credibility.

You want to be a first responder, please take the training. Don't be the guy who screws things up even more and kills a survivable occupant. It will take awhile to get over that, and they never will.

A Lionsteel SR1 and a titanium crowbar. The crowbar I got years ago light strong no rust.

I usually keep an emerson 7 in my car, but I sometimes switch it up to a fixed blade camping knife just for giggles.

Look into the kabar Becker tool, stronger than any folding knife. Blunt tip, strap cutter, and strong. There's a video of fireman prying the door open off a car, cutting the front window open, cutting the roof open, etc. It's also not exspensive and made in the USA.

Now that's what I'm talkin about!
