Last 2 weeks I was on holidays in Corsica. Had some great time backpacking and climbing there. Did one of the long distance trails as well. It's a beautiful island and enjoyed still some good weather too. Took 4 knives with me (Opinel No9 Inox, SAK Camper, Mora 746 and Petzl Spatha), but used only my Opinel  and just once the Mora to remove a splinter...

Anyway seeing all the souvenir and knife shops I had to buy a knife of course ;) Saw a nice Vendetta with 440c steel in a display so decided to get it. The shop owner searched for the same model in his stock and gave it to me. I noticed directly that this was the same model but in 420 steel whereas the knife on display was in 440c steel. So told the shop owner, who informed me that they changed the blade steel to 420 steel because it's easier to sharpen. Since I preferred the 440c version the friendly owner searched all his stock and finally took the knife from the display. Thanked the shop owner and left happy the shop showing my new knife to my girlfriend.... while still thinking in the back of my head "hm they changed it because it's easier to sharpen, isn't it just cheaper in production..."

Were those knife locally produced?
If so, the cost of steel is negligible. It really doesn't matter if you make it from 420 or 440c.

But, if they are made in china - than it still is not the factor of cost, but of availability. The 420 knives might be the only one available unless specially ordered.

420 can be blanked too. Not sure about real 440C though. I don't think it can, but I'm darn sure not an expert.
