I'm curiius about the scallop in the butt-end of the handle scale - looks great but is that a functional or purely cosmetic feature?
Both functional and cosmetic, though this piece would be considered more cosmetic than functional. The handle accommodates three fingers ahead of scalloped area, so that the pinky rests in the scalloped area to balance some of the rearward pressure of the front fingers. In Reverse grip, the forefinger would lock into that area. The rear point of the handle is for punyo. These comments probably make more sense when describing a more functional version of the knife. Obviously, this knife is entirely functional, but it might get you laughed out of the local fight club if you waved it around.
