Could you wonder citizens of shop talk please post some pics of burners that you have built? I'm looking to build one for my forge. I've looked at several designs, but would like to see what is most popular/successful.

Also, is 1-10 PSI enough range for a regulator? I can get a good deal on one with 36" stainless braid covered hose.

Not sure if you can see it here, I don't have a pick of it alone.

I have a 30 PSI reg and I'm pretty sure most others use the same. The 10 might work on a smaller burner but it won't be effective when you go larger than 1/2". Occasionally I run mine at 12 psi but normally around 8-10. You may not have good control without the higher range.

I have an original Chile Forge Habanero with the twin old style 1 inch venturi burners, not the new super burners. I can get to forging heat at around 3 PSi and I forge weld at about 4-5 PSI. Before I got my Paragon, I was able to heat treat carbon steel using a black iron pipe muffle and a single 1/2 inch burner.

A 0-10PSI regulator will work, but it won't have as much fine adjustment. You could go ahead and get it and if you find that you want a different one down the line you can upgrade then. I like the side draft burner design, but I am biased.

I use the Zoeller Z burners now and love em. I forge around 5-7psi and use to HT at .5 - 1.5psi. Those Chilli forges seem really efficient.

I'd just purchased one of Rex's 1" hybrid burners prior to Chili releasing their new super burners, but they (the kind Starlings (sp?) who own/run Chili) were very accommodating when I had to call and order one of their gas lines as nobody in my region carried the needed parts (1-30 LPI reg gauge, nipples, and hose) and Larry was still out from shoulder surgery.
They even went out of their way to go ahead and apply sealant to all the threaded parts before they shipped them.

I have the Chili Habenero with the new generation "super burners" that JDM alluded to. Almost always, I use only one of the two burners and forge at 2 psi which produces a pretty consistent 1625 degrees, and heat treat around 1 psi. These are the burners:

I can't get my 1" habanero burner to run much lower than 3PSI in a satanite/IT100 coated 2" fiber lined 20lb propane cylinder shelled forge. Anyone got any suggestions as to why or how to make it work at lower PSI thus lower temps?

Hey Phil.... maybe the 1" Habanero is too big to run that low. My Z-Burner is 3/4" and I can only run it that low when it is IN the forge and at full heat. If I clamp it in a vice and run it in open air, I can only get down to 4psi before it sputters out.

Ya, I'm talking about in the forge chamber, not in a vise. I as well was figuring it was likely too large a burner to get to run that low, but I wonder how Bigblue17 gets it to work in his at 2 and 1 PSI?

Phil - I'm hardly the expert on this stuff, so I wouldn't venture a guess on why you have issues with low pressure operation. What I do is block off the rear forge opening by 1/2 with a fire brick. Initially, I'll warm up the forge at 3 psi, but once the forge is up to temp I can lower it down.

My forge is in a 10' x 16' wooden shed in my backyard. I keep the double doors open as well as a window in the rear of the building. to provide air flow and ventilation. If its pretty windy out I can not hold that low psi and have to run it up to 2 or 3 psi. to prevent sputtering.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Bigblue17. Ya, I'm outside so the forge just about always has to buck some sort of breeze. Even the lightest breeze effects it. I block off the back door too. Guess--unless I forge in a building of some sort--3psi is about the lowest I can go. Maybe a smaller burner will be the way to go for lower temps.

Yeah, for sure. You can't have any type of draft across your venturi air intake when running that low. I've had mine snuffed out while the forge is coming to heat.... It's always fun when there is a delay in the auto ignition and you get the chest thumping BAWOOOOOF! when it finally restarts.... lol.
