Verawood smell

Recently got a qsp hawk with verawood grips. The knife looked pretty good. Actually liked it but the smell from either the verawood or the sticky crap that was on the blade was overwhelming! Had a strong musky pine type smell you could actually smell from another room away! Does anyone know if that grip material has a strong odor? Anyway I've contacted the seller and sending back. The blade had the sticky crap all over it. I'm not sure if it came from qsp like that or if the seller had just resold it like that. Returning is free so not worried but just makes you a little annoyed you open a knife box and get that. Was looking for something to compare the civivi elementum to but can't keep this qsp for the smell.

I have a plank of verawood (really heavy - dense hard wood) and it does not have a noticeable scent, but I haven't worked it yet. According to Wood Database, freshly worked verawood has a perfume-like scent.

The other question is if it is real verawood. Verawood has very interesting feathering in the grain, see the attached picture:

It had that feathering in the wood. I also noticed the sticky stuff was inside the frame also. Almost like some type of glue. The grips looked good but and this would be a ideal.knofe to take hunting since the cover scent from the knife would be enough
