As far as practical usage of the Orginal and early 112 versions.. was there any features less desired and later improved , that make buying such an early 112 as a daily user a not worth while purchase and they’re better as display only? I like the micarta scales on those early 112 and don’t wanna spend the hundreds on the tributes.

I think the modern 112 is a better user. Its edge has way better cutting geometry and its older predecessors and 420HC will take a thinner, sharper edge than 440C in my experience. The Micarta scales were a winner, though!

Nothing wrong with an original 112. One of my favorites.

I started using them around d 75 or 76, and never had obvious issues, especially after I figured out that whole sharpening thing....

So what if someone bought a vintage squared micarta 112:: and either had that original blade sent to factory to have an edge 2000 put on it .. or a brand new blade installed with edge 2000? Best of both worlds?

It'd probably be pretty awesome.

I have a 2 dot that I sent in for spa treatment a year or so ago. I asked them to put the modern edge on it, and I've been very happy with it.

Yeah, that would make a really nice user. The 2-dot that Buck restored for me had wood scales, but other than that, it fits that scenario.

In my opinion there's not a lot of difference between the old knives and the new knives from a durability standpoint. Once you get beyond things like the 110 change from fiber, to brass, to stainless spring holders, a lot of the changes over the years have been made to improve the manufacturing process.

I've never used 440-c to have any real experience with it over 420 but Edge 2000 is definitely easier to sharpen. Flat frame vs radiused is probably a bigger factor. I think the S30V drop point blade makes the best user (or S35VN!!) but no early 112's had them. It was a fairly big deal at Buck to radius the 110 and 112..Five different varieties were taken to the Blade Show to get feedback. I 'think' Chuck Buck thought the flat frame gave a more secure grip. If you really like 440-c at the 35th there was a build out Koa for only $100.00 with the LE blade 2 line tang stamp. They went quick but are out there.

Just a thought.... If you want an original 112, then go for one. The originals have a brass rear spacer.
The Tributes have a stainless rear spacer... Just sayin...

One exclusive feature the old 112s have is the whole nostalgia thing going on. :)
