Vertical blade forge?

I'm a novice. My only experience so far is reading the posts and owning a elevator cable knife for about 20 years.

I want to build a forge dedicated to one task, cable knives.

In reading the posts regarding flux damage to the forge lining, kitty liter etc. I thought of the following:

A vertical forge in which my material is hung down into it. Any flux would fall through the lower end opening and no floor to worry about.
My main concern is the heat profile top to bottom. Has this been done?
Your coments please.

Hi,
Bottomless forges have been around a long time. Put a box of kitty litter below it to catch the mess. Or say "Here Kitty Kitty" at just the right time. Dogs like their meals cooked. :D
As to hanging the work inside, this is a bigger problem. Getting the piece in and out quickly is an issue. Best to just put in two windows opposite each other about 2/3rds of the way to the top and run the piece across the forge. This is going to heat about as much metal as you can work in a single heat anyway.
If you want a more efficient forge, put a welded bottom on it and insulate with brick or castable lining. Put some kitty litter on top of that. About 1" worth. Then make the TOP removable and you can reline the sides of the forge with Kaowool or scrape the bottom without it becoming a big deal. DO NOT forget to stabalize your Kaowool with satinite or furnace cement. An ITC-100 coat over that makes things really hot. That fluffy white stuff blowing out of the forge is hell on the lungs. Coating stops that.

Ken,

AS I understand things one needs to weld a 'handle' on the workpiece when working it. The handle can be 3 feet long if necessary.

So how 'bout this:

xxxxxxxxxxxxx_______ handle long enough to be cool
xxxxxxxxxxxxxx :
xxxxxxxxxxxxxx :
xxxxxxxxxxxxxx :
xxxxxxxxxxxxxx :
xxxxxxxxxxxx : : :
xxxxxxxxxxxx : ? :
xxxxxx gas in : ? : height tall enough to obtain 6" uniform T
xxxxxx===== : ? :
xxxxxxxxxxxxx : ? :
xxxxxxxxxxxxx :....: open or closed bottom

____________/////___kitty litter beneath

One could use a removeable bottom as an option.
