Someone posted a very good explanation of the different reasons and stages of vertical movement during quenching. It included the raising of the tips of swords on water and the lowering of tips of large knives in oil. Does anyone know where to find it, or who posted it?

no idea about the article, but i did this with one of the bowies i made, i did an edge quench in oil, and i waited for the back of the blade to turn black before i dunked it. It was explained to me that in the quench the steel "freezes" in the expanded state and be steel out of the quench continues to contract as it cools. It is hard to controll, because if you dont hold the blade streight vertical then it will also warp to the side a bit.
