I was wondering if anyone could see any blatent flaws with these dimensions for a vertical forge. OD of 20", ID of 14" with 3" walls of castible. Inside height of 19" with openings of 6" wide by 3" tall. The top of the openings being 4" from the ceiling (also 3" min of castible). I figured I could cast a small block to fill in half of the openings for most work. It will have a forced air blower running natural gas. Any comments welcomeas I didn't think far enough ahead to take measurments off of the forges Uncle Al made. Thanks

Why a 6 -inch wide x 3-inch tall hole? Do you mean the opposite?

For what it is worth here are my thoughts. I made my forge an ellipse (longer than the width by six inches). This gives you a longer weld heat capability. Mine is out of 14" thin wall pipe w/ 2" of Kaowool. So the inside dimensions on mine are 10' X 16".The three inches of castable are going to take quite a while to come up to a welding heat. Nothing wrong w/ that if you intend to forge all day but I tend to forge for 30 to 45 minutes at a time. My next forge will have six X six doors front and back on it. I want to block off the lower section of the doors w/ firebrick to make the front opening 4 X 4 and the rear opening 4 X 2. Then if you want to make a large powder billet you can and then just close the hole down to a more managable size.
