Vertical play on a Chinook?

I just got a new Chinook, awesome knife :D

I love the design and overall girth of it.

Once concern I have is that there is a slight amount of vertical play in the blade. It's not enough to make me concerned that the lock will fail but it is definitely noticeable.

I have not had the opportunity to tighten the pivot screw to see if it helps but the current tension is just about right so I don't know how much I will be willing to tighten it.

Is this normal for the Chinook? Will tightening the pivot a little help?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I believe the vertical bladeplay is something that is common in lock back knives. The design has to allow a certain vertical bladeplay to work properly. There is no "rattle" because the spring in the lock holds it tight but if you put some pressure on the blade in a cutting motion you will notice it.

Correct me if I´m wrong. :)

No blade play on my Chinook. If I really stomp on it, I can get a fractional bit of side play, but I really have to work it.

Yeah, I got a Merlin in the same order and it has no play at all.

I looked a little closer and the play is not coming from the actual lock-up point, it's coming from the spine, I think it's not pinned properly.

My dealer does not have any more and I'm not giving this puppy up! So I shot an e-mail to Sal to see if they'll do an exchange for me.

I could not find a general support address for Spyderco, does anyone have one?

Architect,

no bladeplay at all?

Have you tried pushcutting (without cutting through) a piece of wood to check for vertical bladeplay?

I thought that I had understood the design behind a lock back. Obviously I haven´t if you don´t have any bladeplay :)

If it still doesn´t move, please disregard my first post :o

EDIT: As I said: oops :o

With my memory you never know, but am fairly sure I remember Sal posting somewhere a month or two ago that vertical blade play is not acceptable in the liner locks, at least the upper use level like the MBC knives. I don't think a tiny amount of side to side is all that critical, but I think you're right to have communicated about the play in your blade.

Would be interesting to learn the outcome of this.

It's good to go :D

I tightened the pivot a little and all is well.

BTW, Bugs 3x, Kick butt Avatar, you have too much time on your hands :)
