I wasn't sure, but I thought there might be some out there who would find this knife interesting. William Henry's studio is about 20 miles from me here in Oregon. I've hade the benefit of owning lots of their knives, then selling etc, and visiting their business in McMinnville.
Anyway, a dealer friend of mine had me over yesterday to view a collection of 43 WH knives... mostly all older stuff. Kinda wierd to see so many in one spot, but I managed to get through them all. I left with 1, then after contacting WH for more information and telling them of one other odd ball knife... my attention quickly turned to the oddball knife I didn't buy. It was the only one like it, as it did not have the WH logo but instead had "William Henry - 1998" on the blade. I kind of assumed it must have been yet another special edition, maybe a knife of the year kind of thing. Still It was worth asking. Matt Conable informed me that these knives, marked 1997 and 1998 were made before he designed the WH logo in the spring of 98, and while he was the only person in the studio making knives. So, needless to say probably, I ran back to get it ;) Here is a picture or two in case you ever see one. Less than 200 were made in both years and Mr. Conable said they are very rare to find. This one was never used. Hope you find it interesting ;)

A Nice addition to anyones collection, congrats on a great score.

Cool! This is one of the really fun aspects of knife collecting. Thanks for sharing.

Clarify for me please... Isn't the WH name a middle name of Matt and his partner? Wouldn't his partner have been involved at this early stage? I'm confused.

Regardless, that's a cool score. Who did the silver work?

that's correct about the name, and the partner... but his partner was only on the business side and did not make knives.

Does that help? Not sure on the silver work

Gotcha. As far as I know, they are still together. Actually his partner must be a whiz. Just look at how popular (read: succe$$ful) they have become.

Wow! Thanks for posting the pics... my best friend's first and middle names are William Henry. I'm sure he'd bust a nut if he saw these! Talk about a "holy grail" of knives for him to find. I shall direct him to this thread.

that's funny.... I've had similar reasons for buying knives. the other day my 4 year old son told me a knife I was looking at was "cool". That's a first, and now I'm not sure I can part with it ;)
