Very first crack at filework

Well, I've always liked the look of filework on knives, whether on the blade spine or the backspacer. So, I had an old beater Gerber Paraframe in the garage and decided to give it a try. This is how my very first attempt has turned out so far. I just kind of went with it and did a pretty random pattern. I plan on working on the technique quite a bit more;), but I enjoyed this little project and hope to improve over time. What do you guys think?

That's a fine looking job, Jonny, first time or not!

I've been wanting to try some filework, but I'm too wimpy to give it a go! (Well, that and I haven't invested in some small files). There's another forum member that occassionally puts up some pics and tips, I can't think who it is exactly, right now.

Some pics of your files and how you did it would be cool.

Looks good. How long did it take you to do that? I might go ahead and try that on my Case Sodbuster for a Thanksgiving break project.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the great comments. I was pretty scared to try this for the first time, since it seems like something you could really mess up, but it was actually a lot of fun.

The steel on the old Gerber Paraframe is probably 440, but I can't recall at the moment. The files I used were a six piece set of "jeweler's files" that I picked up at Home Depot for $9.95. The work took me about 3 hours over the course of a few days. They seem to work ok, but I'm sure there are better ones out there that would cut better. I'll invest in some more as I progress. I'll post pics of the set when I get a chance, probably in a few days after BF switches to the new server.

I would recommend this to anyone who's had an interest. Lots of fun, and the results can be pretty cool. Easier than I thought it would be as well.:)

Jonnymac,
Nice job. Stay with it.
You might want to look into Diamond jeweler's files on the internet. I got a set for under $20 awhile back. The work I did on a blade was faster then with a good quality jeweler's file.
Have fun while making your knife Unique.
