I just received my first khukuri today. It is an 18" Ang Khola made by Sher. I have read on the forum that it is traditional to write a little note about one's first khukuri so I will offer my observations. Of course, I am far from being an expert (if you have read any of my posts you already know that!) about khukuris or for that matter even knives in general. Any way, with that disclaimer, here are my observations:
·Must be very careful here. One could get hurt with this thing. This is one helluva knife! Must read, re-read and memorize the Safety thread at the beginning of this forum! Or lose a knee cap.
·Beautiful piece of work. Mirror polished, no hammer marks, no wavy lines, fit and finish all excellent (a short minor hairline crack in horn handle of no consequence) and sharp! Blade is straight as an arrow. Buttcap and bolster smooth and tight fitting. Hard to believe someone put this together by hand.
·Scabbard excellent. No marks, cuts or imperfections noted.
·Specs: Overall length 18 3/8; horn handle 6 1/4; blade 12 ½; spine 7/16 to ½ tapering down to 3/8; ; belly depth 2 ¼; drop 3 ½; point of balance about 4 from the handle; weight 33 oz for khukuri and 12 ½ oz for scabbard
·Chakma 6 ¾ and karda 6 1/8; both very nicely done.
·Feels excellent in hand. This is definitely a chopper!
To say I am pleased with this knife would be a huge understatement. Uncle, please pass along my thanks to Sher for a very fine effort. Thanks to you also for sending it to me.
I cant wait for that Kobra I ordered to arrive!
