Those of you who don't get out of the balisong forum much may not be aware that US Customs recently confiscated most of the inventory of Columbia River Knife and Tool Company of Wilsonville, Oregon. All of CRKT's products are imported, so Customs does have this authority. None of them are balisongs, so it may not seem relevant to us. But, I think it is. Customs is claiming that these one-hand folders are switchblades. Of course, they are not. But this is the same law that customs uses to block the importation of balisongs. This case could cause a major re-evaluation of this law.

Now, you might say that the last thing we need is more China Cheapies. But, there are a lot of really nice balisongs especially from Europe that I would like to see imported. Besides, this case is of huge importance to all knife enthusiasts.

So, study up.

10-4 Chuck. Listen guys this is another classic example of "give them an inch, take a mile". If this gets out of hand they will be seralizing knives and having you register them!

I have written all the congressmen and women and senators from my state. I have sent email, then I printed the emails and sent them in by snail mail. I urge everyone to do this. If you are a member of the NRA contact them too and let them know how important this is to you and the NRA.

I've already contacted one of my Senators, the other doesn't have an email I can contact him with and my Representative doesn't have email either.

There is nothing really unique about a Columbia River knife. They spend a LOT of money on advertising, so for me they are a bit overpriced of an item. But for the most part, it's the same as any other high tech knife, with a lazor cut blade, & computer generated design. Like most everyone else, they have not gotten into lazor cut handles yet.

This is clearly a move on the part of Customs to try and hinder or restrict progress in the technical knife making field. Not only has modern day congress supported freedom of development. But historically, the government has always supported research and development, and allowed people the freedom to advance and develop new areas. That is pretty much what makes this country what it is today.

Hitler tired this sort of restriction, and many of Germanys most creative and gifted people came to American to find the freedom they did. Again, making this the great & prosperous nation that it is today.

Columbia Knives, are not weapons in any way shape or form. At least no more a weapon than a baseball bat. What makes a knife a weapons is a bayonet type blade that is easy to remove and use for repeated stabbing. Utility knives are pretty much a one shot deal as a weapon. They tend to act like a spear head or a hook, that stays in the target and is difficult to remove. Thanks, JohnR7

Back in WWI the soldiers had to do a lot of hand to hand combat, they did have bayonets but were'nt practical to use since they would get stuck in the enemy when you killed them with it and it took to much time to pull it out, you'd have been dead by then.

Sorry guys, but I don't think we'll be getting much out of this. Customs released the knives back to CRKT. This is extremely good for liner-locks, since almost all the big companies make them, but our balisongs don't get anything out of it. Maybe there'll be a landmark case for balis soon.
