Got a set of these. Wow, what a difference! They are much, much coarser than I was came to believe. Very aggressive and sturdy. Made the job of minor reprofiling much faster.
I have a new method that won't work on all steel. Works great on 1095 at 59ish. While every ESEE I have ever bought was consistantly very sharp brand new, they are a little obtuse for my liking. So I use them a bit and then reprofile. Lately I've gone a new route that works well. I have a very sharp no-name file (which oddly enough says "made in India") that works like gangbusters. I real quick flatten the secondary bevel out to approximately 25 inclusive...by eye. Then I go over it with a course DMT file I have. Then I run it through a series of sandings with progressively finer wet-dry to even out the scratch patterns of the files. NOW I take it to the Sharpmaker set at 30 and go to town on the diamond triangles. FANTASTIC results. Then down through the brown and the white triangles and green compound on a Balsa strop.
Pretty conventional stuff really but the ability to do so much of the reprofiling on the Sharpmaker is a real timesaver and the results are great. If you've got a Sharpmaker, you owe it to yourself to save up some cash and get the diamond triangles.
