I wanted to see if anyone has had any experience with this type of (blob) or discoloration on Damascus. My customer has had the knife for about 3 weeks now and he said he uses it every day, he said he only uses dish soap and every few days he puts a little mineral oil on it. I have made a few hundred Damascus knives now and this was the first time anyone has had an issue like this, i expect a natural patina over time but not blob in one area. I can’t think of what he could have done and it’s on both sides. I use 1084 & 15N20, I use ferric chloride 3 to 1 with distilled water. Then coffee etch after that - if that helps anyone 😊
My guess would be his wife might have used a harsh cleaner on it but won’t admit it lol
Last pic is original condition.
I would like to know what might have caused it so I can advise people what not to do.
Thanks in advance, I appreciate any help.

Coat the entire blade with mayonnaise, let stand for a few minutes. Wipe off the excess and rinse off, dry. Should be good to go

I use a carbon steel knife daily in the kitchen and one thing I've noticed, certain things will take off whatever patina I have on the blade. Oddly enough I think lemons are one of those things IIRC. If I cut a bunch of lemons I'll end up with a shiny spot on the blade; and if I don't rinse and wipe shortly after cutting those lemons; it'll re-patina.

My wife has a few but hers look great, just normal patina stuff on them she has cut lemons but they don’t look like this blob, maybe he didn’t rinse after cutting a few lemons or something. Thanks for the info 👍🏻
