I got a call last week from a very good friend of mine in Bridgehampton inviting me and my son out to his place for the special youth turkey season on Long Island. It was the first year for such a season here on Long Island. He had several decent birds he has been watching and felt our chances were pretty good. This would be my sons first official turkey hunt. He has been out with me in the field but just got his license 3 weeks ago.
We got up yesterday morning at 2:30 AM to make the drive and I looked outside to see rain. Hmm... Not the best weather in my past experience for hunting turkeys. On the drive I explained to Tyler what he might experience toady with the rain. He was nothing but excited.
At about 5:35 the birds started to fire off. It sounded like we had 3 toms within 100yds of us. As the sky started to lighten up 2 birds flew down into the clearing we were sitting in, both toms. They headed away and my sons mood ghanged slightly to one of sadness. Then within 10 minutes a lone tom decided to close in on our decoys. My son made a perfect shot at 27 paces. I can not put in to words how proud I was of him. The only thing that was missing was his Grandpa. We lost him 2 years ago to Pancreatic cancer. I know he was watching the whole show from upstairs.
I just wanted to share a very emotional hunt with people here with similar values.
Right after the shot on the way back.
My friend Ray, Myself and the star of the day Tyler.
The bird weighed in around 20lbs, 9" beard with 1.25" spurs. What a great hunt. Thanks for reading.
