I live in an apartment building. I used to love riding my Bike trainer over the winter but it was way noisy for my new apartment. Does anyone have any suggestions on an aerobic trainer of some sort that is Very quiet. Doesnt have to be a bike trainer but it should be able to fold up to some degree for easier storage.

The worst cause of noise in an exercise machine is IMO the thump-thump-thump of high-impact aerobics (e.g. running). For a low-impact machine (rowing or cycling), resistance mechanisms cause nearly all of the noise.

Open-air fans, as found on the least expensive bicycle stationary trainers, are extremely noisy. Magnetic and fluid systems are quieter. Rollers are quietest, but they require more room and sometimes provide inadequate resistance.

Crank out 500 Hindu squats in 15 minutes, if you can! Not only will you be drenched in a pool of sweat and be close to vomiting last night's dinner, but you WILL be semi-quiet. At least no thumping... and talk about aerobic!

I used to ride a bike a lot.In the winter I used a windtrainer, this you mount your road bike on and is quiet compared to "excersize bikes".I also have a Nortic Track ski, these are smooth and do not make to much noise.

The Lifecycle brand that they use in health clubs is pretty quiet, they make versions for the home that you can buy.

I like mine!

Alex,

Check into the Cycle-Ops line of trainers. I've got a Fluid Plus that I've used for about 4 years now (2 in a 3rd floor apartment.)

It still hums like a trainer should but not loud enough to disturb anyone outside of the training area.

I think they run about $200 for the really good ones and less as you go down the line.

An added benefit to the Fluid Plus is the realistic feel of the resistance. No more drop at higher cadence.

Check the web. I'm sure they've got a website. If not, I think Colorado Cyclist carries them.

Hope this helps,
