Dear Forumites,
sorry to post this message here too, but I want to reach the maximum number of you.
As you can see, I live in Italy. I want to warn you about this problem:
- if you are coming to Italy by plane, and you land at the Airport of Rome "Leonardo da Vinci" (or Fiumicino Airport), and you take a cab to reach Rome or another city or town, BE VERY CAREFUL AT THE CAB YOU ARE GOING TO CHOOSE!!!!
In 10 days 62 illegal taxi drivers were found at this airport: they take a client, and then they try to steal money, goods or whatever they want from the tourists.
These illegal taxi drivers ask from 300.000 Italian Lire (145 USD) to 700.000 Italian Lire (335 USD) for a drive that costs about 75.000 Italian Lire (about 35 USD). To ask for the price before getting in is NOT a solution: they tell to you the honest price, then they stop the car far from Rome and the airport and steal your money. Very often to call police is not a solution.
YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL AND TRY TO TAKE LEGAL AND AUTHORIZED TAXI DRIVERS. THE BEST ADVICE I CAN GIVE YOU TO RECOGNIZE THEM, IS TO LOOK AT THEIR CAR: THERE HAVE TO BE A SIGN ON THE ROOF, SAYING "TAXI", MADE WITH A RED LIGHT WHEN TURNED ON . AVOID CABS HAVING THE SIGN "TAXI" ONLY WRITTEN ON PAPER OR THE LIKE, NOT "BUILT" AS A PART OF THE ROOF. DON'T TRUST PEOPLE SHOWING YOU BADGES: THEY COULD BE FALSE OR FROM DIFFERENT ORGANIZATIONS THAN AUTHORIZED CAB COMPANIES.
VERY OFTEN AUTHORIZED CAB DRIVERS ARE IN GROUPS OR IN LINES. DON'T TRUST IN CAB DRIVERS HAVING THEIR CAR FAR FROM OTHERS DRIVERS.
