very small needle large haystack

Some very old cobwebs in my head have been disturbed lately.
This is a off the wall, needle-in-a-haystack idea. But, what the heck.
When I was in high school (40 years ago) I made a knife in metals shop with the help of my teacher, a kris style out of a 10-12" file. The handle was brass turned down on a lathe (It was very heavy). On the end of that was a small nome like figure carved out of deer horn.
I won a state Industrial Arts award with it (I remember the teacher got in trouble for letting me make it and knives were banned from future Industrial Arts competitions). At that time, other than the support from that teacher, all reactions were very negative and I put off my interest in knives.
Anyway I traded it for a painting easel when I was in college. I have no clue what happened to it, The person I traded it to, joined the Navy and ended up in Washington state, it may have stayed in North Dakota. or gone with his parents who moved to Texas or who knows.
I realize the chance of finding this is pretty thin.........thin........ but I figure these forums are a good place to ask if someone might have come across it.
I figure it don't hurt to ask, Thanks in advance folks for any information.

I think your best bet is to try to track down the person you traded it to. With his name (hopefully it isn't something like "John Smith"), and some web sites like whowhere.com or whitepages.com, you may be able to find where he is now. If he's still in the navy, maybe they can help you also.

Good luck

Besides myself, there are about 6 others from WA State... If you can get a name or City I'd be willing to make some calls for you to save the long distance. Other than that, not sure how much help I can be. Email me at:

Best of luck,

Progress. I've found the fellow I had traded the knife to. Using google and the help of a friendly webmaster. Now to see what happened to it. Thanks for the offers of help, I may need it yet.

Cool- Hope this works out.
Best of Luck-

It sure would be a great story if you were able to get that knife back.
By the way, was that the first knife you made? It seems like a difficult project to have picked. I would sure like to see how good of a job you did. Post a picture if you can.
Have a great Christmas, and all the best in the new year with your quest.

A direction. The guy who had the knife. Had it with him when he was in the Navy. He sold it to navy guy in a different squadron, when he was in transit on the USS Ranger in '67' I am working on trying to get a few more details that might help.
Unfortunatly I don't have any pictures of it. At least I haven't found any yet, been digging in old chests looking.
Keith, yes it was my first project unless you count the nails I forged into sabers on a barbacue grill, for my plastic army men when I was younger. I do believe the project took me most of the school year to do back then.
Will keep posting as I get any new information. The best part has been reconnected to a old buddy I haven't hear froom for 30 years. Merry Christmas to All
