Today my wonderful wife and equally wonderful mother gave me a Randall model 23. This means so much to me as we almost lost my mom over thanksgiving when she became very ill, and they both know how much I've wanted one of these. I am indeed blessed.

I have a question to all you Randall experts...This 23 has a roughback sheath. Is there a way to get an approximate age of this knife? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim

As to the Randall Model #23 'Gamemaster', it was introduced in 1972 in a baby dot snapped version of a Maurice Johnson roughback sheath. Maurice handed the reins of the family run business to his son Johnny right around 1984 or '85...

Johnny Johnson continued to make roughback style sheaths for some sheath models thru 1991, but had primarily transitioned into a smoothback style sheath for most models by late 1988/early 1989...

A lot can be told about a Randall knife from this period (early 1970's thru early 1990's) by examination of the sheath (if original to the knife); the handle spacer type used; and other minor characteristics...

Like Rhett mentioned above, a photograph or two would be needed to better approximate the actual age of the knife. Hope that helps,

Shel

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. I'll try to figure out how to post pics and get those up.
