Hello everybody,

I have just got my brand new Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn Covert 154CM delivered from Knifeworks and as far as it is my very first A-F folding knife I would like to ask why is it opening and closing that stiff and tough? I am doing everything as shown on that little manual by pushing the thumb straight forward but nevertheless I have to apply a reasonable amount of force to get the knife opened and fixed.

The knife itself is absolutely new with even oil visible on the locking mechanism.

Does it mean that I have to get used to it? The matter is that I have Spyderco Military and the difference is like heaven and earth - how light the Millie is that tough and stiff the Gerber A-F Covert is. I mean the opening of the both knives.

As already mentioned, loosening the pivot screw would be the first thing to try.

The quality control on these has never been that great at all.

I have read nothing but constant complaints about them over
the past ten years or so.

Bad heat treats of the blades — regardless of the steel used. Screws that fall out. Definitely a knife to stay away from.

This is not a solution in my case as I have always had some sort of very special feelings towards those A-F daggers. Boker fixed blades are too big for any outdoor carry and this Covert just looks like a writing pen when folded in with all iconic features reserved. That's why I have bought it.

I have two Gerber Covert knives, one opens smooth like butter and the other is a little stiff. Opening it a few hundred times while watching TV has helped loosed it up. I think they are well made knives and what is nice is that the blade is entirely enclosed by the handle and sharpening the other side you have a true double edge blade. Nice.

By the way how are those Coverts compared to full-sized A-F Combat Folders? A lot of people say that Coverts are better made knives with better 154CM blades and better liner locks.

I have the Combat model and it is the same as the Covert but bigger, same roto lock safety but the blade is 420HC and not 154CM like the Covert so it does not hold an edge as well but it is a lot easier to sharpen.

Thanks for sharing. I will stay with my Covert model probably. I have also noticed that they modified the blade shape for the Covert giving it more narrow and stiletto-styled look. BTW, it is hard to distinguish that it is a knife when it is folded in - it is as slim as writing pen. :)
