The detent on my 550 is so strong that my thumbs are starting to bruise from opening it over and over again. Is this normal?

Not sure if this is the same as what you're seeing, but for me, it was more that any additional pressure on the lockbar made the knife nearly impossible to open (even pulling on it two-handed). I found that I was resting my index finger over the lockbar and slightly squeezing when pushing the thumb stud up. Shifting my index finger to the area by the pivot screw and my middle finger down to rest on the clip (mounted for tip-up carry) fixed this for me.

0550's come with a crazy hard detent. Mine was the same way until I flipped it a few hundred times. Now it is one of the smoothest openers I have.

I guess I was lucky with perfect detent, or just because mine has 2 detent balls (yes it's a boy)! Just watch finger placement, and a good thorough cleaning and oiling would most likely help, along with flipping to break in.

why are you opening it over and over again..you only need to open a knife once to use it.. I often wonder how many times people open a knife to use it vs how my times they open it over and over for no reason.

My 0561 is real hard to open. I can't open it with the thumbstuds without injuring my thumb. With the flipper I can open it but it does take a lot of force. If I had to open it a lot it would either give me a blister or a good callus. I'm hoping it will ease up a little bit with repeated use.

I feel like an idiot. I was wondering why it would open so much easier when the knife was in my left hand; it was because my finger wasn't resting on the lockbar. I held the knife like you said, and now it opens with ease.

Thanks.

Oh now chester, don't be that way. Some of us are fiddlers. And I don't mean violinists ;).
