I recently picked up this George Barnsley #3 shoemaker s hammer at a flea market, the handle is split full length (doesn't show in the pic), so I picked it up with the intention of re-handling it.

When I got it home & looked at the handle further it's clear that it had split before a long time ago (the full length flat), the bit that split off has been discarded & the hammer had kept on being used as it's got that hand rounding that comes from lots of use, I began to think the thumb impression might be from use as well but I think it must have been sanded, it fits the hand really well.

Surprisingly it's still comfortable in the hand. Think I'll have to leave it as is now...........

:)

Beautiful piece. I can't resist old hammers. I prolly have 50-75 in my garage in the to-do pile. Ball pein, cobbler, claw, a rock pick. I see old rusty hammer, my eyes rust over and it ends up following me home.

It looks intentionally modified for that shape. Maybe the cobbler knew what he wanted?

Yes, I think it's too much for wear. I remember seeing an image on the net somewhere of a hammer handle something like this that was actually wear, can't find it now........

Just the same here. ;)

There are some pieces that should be refurbished and some that should be left alone. In this case I wouldn't touch it, very cool hammer.

Yeah, this'll be left alone. Too much of a story.

Remembered where I'd seen the worn hammer handle, in this great video.

Skip to 1:38 (& 3:47) for the worn handle, better still watch it all. ;)

How many times picking it up, using it & putting it down again does it take to get that wear............

Thanks very much for posting this! Otherwise it'd be darn near impossible to conceive of someone performing the exact same motions with 'a' hammer many thousands of times per day, and millions of times over a decade. I'm thinking when such a tradesman had to re-haft such a tool (after it wore out, cracked, split or fell on the floor?) he probably used a rasp to initiate hand/thumb registration indents again.
