A few more questions for you folks. I used my AK for the first time this weekend and damned if it wasn't effective. It did everything I wanted it to and pretty much laughed at me. As if to say "Is this all you got?" Very pleased with the product and now that I have 4 I find myself planning for more. Now that I have used it, I was wondering about some of the long time users here. Do you guys keep the convex edge or do you "customize" to your own needs? Whats your sharpening equipment and routine?

I keep the convex edge.

Generally I like 'em sharp but not too super-sharp, even though I turned my chitlangis into big straight razors just to see if it could be done.

What I use initially is a diamond hone to get the edge where I want it and slowly convex it back by hand, then touch it up with a couple arkansas stones and a butcher's steel and sometimes the chakma. After I have the edge where I like it, all I use (mostly) to maintain the edge is a butcher's steel and the chakma.

I like an diamond oval shaped hone with a 15"surface, if you want simple and effective for the one who may not be the slickest at sharpening, this is it. I also use a fine arkansas stone and the last is an bow strop that I made.

I basically do what Wolf 1989 does, except I just keep it touched up with the fine side of my diamond stone.

Wouldn't using a stone take of the convex edge? And I take using a butcher steel which I have doesn't do anything to the convex? It hasn't seem to.

You move the stone over the edge, not the edge over the stone. the natural movements of your hand will convex the edge.

A lot of people "Accidentally" discover conves edges that way.

I use an 8" norton stone, and a strop loaded with chromium oxide (green). Not really a sharpening guru, though. Minor variations of the angle, and dishing of the stone over time, will keep the edge somewhat convex if you use a hard stone. Sandpaper/mousepad gives you more consistent convexing.

And you don't really need more khuks - just more stuff to chop. :D

don't listen, everyone needs more khuks, there's always a model you don't have that you must add. once HIKV bites, you can never be normal again. even if you have all the HI models, there are variations. and antique khuks, like fine wine, for those special occasions.

hey knife_nut73, would you mind leaving me some feedback??? thanks a million.....
