Just called my Uncle Rick on Long Island. He was a B-17 pilot in WWII. Can you imagine 75% losses on daylight bombing raids? If it weren't for all those WWII vets, this forum wouldn't be here. Thanks Uncle Rick.

My mother's half brother, who was the last surviving member of our family who served in WW2, died in 2007 from complications from a moderate stroke. I got to visit with him in the hospital and nursing home before he died and he told me a couple of stories from when he was a young 19-20 year old B-29 pilot in the Pacific. He told one about his plane taking a hit in the head and the contents of the porta potty spaying all over the engine and cooking all the way back to Saipan. They had to junk the plane and use it for spare parts because they could never scrub the stink out of it.:D That was my experience with my grandfather, uncle and others I knew who served. The tended to tell the funny stories and not talk about the horrors. The expected and asked for no pity and it they suffered, they did it quietly. they did their duty and when the fight was won, they came back home and did their best to live their lives. Truly the greatest generation.

So many of these WWII vets have now passed on, along with them their personal stories of their service and experiences overseas.

They will be missed, but not forgotten.

Thank you,
