I'm going to be buying a Benchmade Vex or a Boker Subcom, but am unsure which is the better bang for the buck. I've never owned, held, or even seen either one in person. I can get the Vex from Premium Knives for $46.00 including shipping, or the Subcom from S & S Retail for $32.00 including shipping.

Two entirely different animals.

The SubCom is available in a larger variety of styles, so it may be easier to find the SubCom that's right for you (including a fixed blade version in 440C). The SubCom is available in 420J2 and AUS-8A blade steels. It's ground so that any blade-like steel will cut like a demon.

The Vex is, well, I don't/won't have one of those, but did I tell you about Boker's SubCom?

They vastly different knives. One is a pocket knife (but a great cutter) the other is larger, more of a regular sized folder (weights a lot more too).

FYI I ordered once from premium knives and they had me wait for the knife 4 weeks AFTER they charged my CC. Make 100% they have it in hand/ready to ship if you dare to order from them.

I have both. As already mentioned, entirely different knives. The small Subcom is a nice little forget-it's-there kind of knife, with great ergos. As much as I love the design, and as much as I carry it (more than the Vex), it isn't as utilitarian than the Vex. The Vex, due to the larger blade and handle, is more useful for most everyday cutting tasks. If you're just opening envelopes and such you're not going to notice much difference.

You get a lot more 'knife' with the Vex than the Subcom. It's built like a tank for a liner lock folding knife. And the fit and finish is quite nice. The only downside is that the clip is tip down only.
