I can see that discussion of the new Benchmade Vex has produced some discussion and questions.

Sorry for not getting here sooner, I’ve been traveling for a while. Seems like there is a lot going on.

I was pleased with the civility and respect demonstrated on both of the Spyderco forums. Even “heat” was quickly and effectively handled. I’m proud to say that I am a part of your group.

I also appreciate those that came to our defense.

I’d like to welcome the new members to the Spyderco forum. We always appreciate the support and input.

I was surprised by the legal discussion. It shows that many understand there is far more complexity to patents and trademarks than might appear to the layman.

I appreciate and thank you for the reference to the round hole as a Spyderhole.

All I can say is that Benchmade and Spyderco have an agreement. Spyderco will honor that agreement.

Thank you for the update, sir. And rest assured that you will reap at least one tiny benefit from this sorry mess...all my knife business instead of some of it.

Amen to what yablanowitz stated!

Thank you, Mr. Glesser, for the information and the constant stream of innovation!

Regards,
3G

P.S. yablanowitz, I was very impressed with your post on the "other forum" when this whole (hole) fiasco started. Good on you for your civility and integrity!:)

Thanks for at least saying something, Mr. Glesser. I was beginning to think that Spyderco had been totally silenced on the matter, which caused more than a little despair.

Still, I can only get the impression from this confidentiality that Spyderco has been bullied or somehow wronged by BM. I know how much you have stood by your trademark and how much effort you have recently put into keeping a solid grip on it, so I can't possibly see this as anything but bad with so little info.

Needless to say, I'll be very wary of BM and have certainly lost even more appreciation for them overall. As much interest as I had in some of their products, it will be hard to purchase any of them at this point. You have a life long loyal customer in me, however.

Two Byrds in the pocket is better than one Vex'ing hole.

The steel is almost identical and I can get G-10 and better locks 2 for the same price as one. Go Meadowlark and Cara Cara!

The Byrd steel is 3-4 points harder on the rockwell scale, meaning that the Byrds will likely sharpen much easier and hold a better edge. My G-10 Cara Cara has far exceeded my expectations of what a $22 knife can be, it is always with me in case a tough job crops up. After 2 weeks of EDC it can still shave and push cut newsprint over an inch from where I hold it, try that with another $22 knife. Byrds will definately be my model of choice for great value knives. For the price of a vex you could get an Endura or a Centofante in VG-10, much more value for your dollor. Not to mention the real, patented, trademarked Spyderhole.

Thanks Mr. Glesser... for those of us who support yourself and your product 100%, we appreciate you keeping us informed.

Once again, Mr. Glesser, you impress me. Time to pull out my old plan again ... have my paychecks direct deposited to Spyderco.

All power to the Spyder god!:D

J85909266 - wondering why you have that impression?

Businesses have confidential agreements all the time, the details of which are not released.

Wow, all that armchair lawyering for nothing! :D

Seriously, I just saw a Vex and it's an awesome deal for $60 MSRP. Proof that the round hole is still the best.

I should add that Spyderco has some killer low-to-moderate offerings as well, like the new Byrd Cara Cara's and Meadowlarks in G10, and the Centafante 3's and 4's for $70. Good jobs all around.

Like I said, Spyderco has had a rocky past on this very issue with BM first regarding the AFCK, and then the Skirmish. Also consider how much time, effort and money Sal has spent securing that trademark in the past and even more so recently by adding it to fixed blades and putting a Spyder by every hole. It just doesn't make sense to me that he would willingly allow them to throw the Spyderhole on some cheap model without even crediting Spyderco. In the past he has put all the details on the table for us to read, but now everybody is keeping a tight lip on the matter, which adds to my suspicion. I simply can't imagine that BM went about this in any honorable manner. Granted it's all speculation, and ultimately my opinion, but I stand by it 100%.

Exactly. We should hang them just in case they did do something wrong.

:thumbdn: I'm not saying that we should colletively do anything. I'm not pushing for a boycott. I have nothing against somebody buying a Vex or any other BM. However, I do have my own personal thoughts and opinions on the matter, and I'm entitled to post them. I believe I stated that my own ponderings were all specualtion.
