I took both of my Vex out of their sheathes Friday for the first time after blade and noticed some very light surface rust near the tip where it looked like it had been in contact with the leather. It is not a big issue and will probably come off with a little metal polish but I wanted to give everyone a heads up.If you store yours in leather you may want to put a light coat of oil to protect it from rust.

All leather is not created equal, what sheath did you store them in?

All my nekkid mole rats live in their sheaths and no issues after a half dozen years.

a good preventative is either Ren Wax or Flitz, I have had very good results from Flitz and I hear Ren Wax is just as good. But even my untreated Rat Hunter and Rat Mastiff are still rust free. The Mastiff is bead blasted which is supposed to be more prone.

Bear in mind that really cheap leather will have chemicals left in the leather after the aggressive process's they use to treat it. I've encountered this in those early leather sheaths that Busse used to provide, they rusted my INFI blades.

I was the sheathes they were selling at the booth not sure who made them they were simple pouch sheathes.
D-2 is not stainless.
Yeah I know I just expected it to be a little bit more stain RESISTANT than it was.Its no big deal it is very lite I thought it was dirt or stain from the leather at first but when it didn't rub off I realized it was rust.It is not near as bad as my Comp Helle Razor from last year before I oiled it up.:)

You sure you didn't spill some Bud Light down it those sheathes?!?! ;)

I got mine yesterday, and the first thing I did was use it to help with with dinner. I cut up some steaks. Now it's got the start of a patina, already. I thought D2 was more stain resistant.

Believe it or not, Steak sauce is very corrosive to knives - I have a Mirror Polished ATS-34 Custom that I use and years ago I used it to cut steak and BAM - pitting.

D2 when not given a high polish (which is most of the time) is prone to develop a patina almost as fast as 1095 or any other Carbon steel. Even blood with cause this as I have had that happen also.

Like someone mentioned - RenWax first and then quick cleaning after is the best way to protect D2.

The steak sauce makes sense, containing acidic tomato and all, but my steaks were seasoned with salt and pepper only. It was blood that did it.

When I got the knife I washed and dried it and applied a light coat of mineral oil. Then my wife and I used it as a steak knife. Then I washed and oiled it again, but it was already marked.

Not a problem, I was just surprised. Learn something new every day.

I just started experimenting with tuff cloths - we'll see how well they do after some extended use.

Its the acidic nature of thses products on the tool steel,, cut limes with one see what happens,, don't freak out in the am,, lol,,

knives, beer, steak. all the makings of a cool thread!:D

now your knife has character. got any pics?

Infi will patina from cutting steak too. I used my satin Cultie on one steak (just salt and pepper) and it took on an instant, and permanent, patina. Lesson learned... reserve use for users. :D

I've tried taking some pics and no luck, this is tougher than it looks. Or I suck at photography. Or maybe it's because I don't have any beer. :D
