VFD’s and surge protectors

we had some nasty storms roll through here yesterday ... and it got me thinking that VFD’s are controlled by electronics, and electronics are typically protected from electric line surges by ... surge protectors. Should we be using surge protectors for our VFD plugins?

I was wondering the exact same thing the other day. I have been keeping my VFD unplugged when not in use for now.

The recent thunderstorms have had me thinking about installing one of those “whole home” surge protectors that go in breaker box.

It is very likely that you VFD has built in surge protection. But like most surge protectors, there is a limit to how much they can absorb so it wouldn't be a bad idea to put another in line with it

But unplugging it when not using it will probably be better then any amount of protection you can add

It only takes a second to unplug a VFD when not in use. I keep my 2x72 plugged in while in the shop. but when done I always unplug for the evening.
