I am about to pull the cord on the above. Motor specs are 1 HP, 110V, single-phase, 14A, 1725 RPM. Is it worth getting one of the cheap chinese VFDs? If so what specs should I get

TIA

Trying to control a 120vac single phase AC motor speed with varying the frequency is very dicey, at best.
Forget it if the motor has a separate start winding, start capacitor, or centrifugal switch.

If you did get it to work, it would probably derate the motor to half it's rated HP. Also there's air flow/cooling concerns at speeds lower than the motor is designed to run, which will in time, cook the windings.

For these reasons, I don't recommend it.

Don't know if it's cost efficient but, if you want to adapt your exiting system to variable speed, I recommend a DC motor and controller with the right specs.

You can actually get it for a really nice price on Amazon right now. There is Black Decker on sale now for around $40 which is a great price for it honestly. It is good to have something like this when you need it, but most probably you won't be using it on a daily basis. That is true in my case and that is why I went for that model, there are better ones and you can check them out on https://www.bestorbitalsander.com/. They can really help you choose one because in that article you have the reviews on best available sanders.
