VG-1 steel

I just picked up a Cold Steel Pendleton Mini Hunter. I'll post a review on it in a separate thread.

Anyway, it uses VG-1 steel. It was shaving sharp out of the box, but I know nothing about this steel except that I (correctly or incorrectly) equate it to AUS8.

Thoughts appreciated.

No Sir.

AUS8 is .8% C
VG1 is 1% C.

VG1 has the Carbon content of AUS10, not AUS8.

However, VG1 does not have the added nickel, trace of Vanadium, or Moly found in the AUS series, so it is not as fine grained.

Performance wise, I believe you'll find the VG-1 to hold a very slight "edge" over AUS8 if it's a plain edge. If it's a serrated (which the Hunter isn't), I doubt you'll see a difference. I like Cold Steel's serration pattern in their other knives and find that it cuts paper almost as smoothly as a plain edge. Still, you can't whittle or strip bark with a serrated edge.

As far as I know, no one's ever done any side-by-side comparisons between the two steels, but that extra bit of carbon should make your edge a wee bit harder. It wouldn't be worth selling an AUS8 and buying a new knife unless you just want a new knife.

I'll be looking forward to your review.
