OK i know VG-10, but what is this? just a normal damascus steel? I love this Japanese knife, and am probably gonna buy it, just want to know what im buying here!

This is a "damascus look" knife. it is a VG-10 blade clad in 16 thin layers per side of contrasting steel for a cool look. It also is rumored to resist things sticking to it as much.

Real damascus is folded throughout the blade and has no "core". Also real damascus is rarely stainless. Finally real damascus is very expensive. Take a look at a Chris Reeve damascus blade and you will see the differences.

The knife in question should be a great blade and there is nothing wrong with "damascus look" blades. Just think of it as a VG-10 knife (Premium steel BTW) with some extra decoration.

I'm guessing you are looking at a Shun brand kitchen knife?

Made with powdered stainless steel and it' s just for decoration. My kitchen knives are made with this type blade and they make excellent knives and guests ask 'what kind of knife is that ? '
