vg-10 or SR-101 for edge retention?

I've been pretty surprised about the SR-101 of my Rucki. Been through some tough stuff and still shaving sharp. So.....SR-101!!!

yea didn't see the swamp rat forum lol. oops. i would love to be able to afford a busse but ill have to stick with Swamp Rat till tax time lol. It's an addiction isn't it.

Warning.....don't do it....your wallet will never be full again....:)

It depends on the task and how you prepare the edge. Angle and finish make a bigger difference then steel composition when it comes to edge retention. At the end of the day SR101 is going to be a lot easier to maintain and easier to fix. If you are slicing edge retention will be greatly improved with a very low edge angle and coarse edge finish. Push cutting benefits from a high polish on the edge, though chopping wood depends on the stability of the geometry, something you won't have to worry about unless you re-profile either knife.

Hopefully this will go to the Swamp soon, but in the mean time I've had both steels in heavy use processing game and they both have their ups and downs. With VG10 it seems no matter how polished you get that edge, it still has a nice bite, I dont know what it is about that steel but I love the way it bites into soft mediums. You get a nice clean cut all the way to the bone. Dont chop hard materials with it though, chips like crazy.

SR101 performs wonderfully for both chopping and slicing, its a great all around steel. One thing I hate is having to go to the stone mid way in between field dressing a deer or pig, and I can name several steels that have failed me on that, but the Swamp has never failed me.

Just moved this one to the Swamp Rat Forum.

I think the Rats will be able to answer your question better than the Hogs. :)

Thanks!

I have found VG-10 by any maker to chip faster than any other steel. I would pick SR101 any day. It has held its edge longer than just about anything else I have.

I have had good luck with VG10 (no chipping), but it is not in the league of Busse-treated SR101 for edge retention. Love it.
