VG-10 stainless???

I've noticed that most of spyderco's knives use either ats-34 or ats-55 steel. Why then does the calypso jr. use stainless steel (or so I've heard). Does this cause much of a compromise in performance? I'm thinking of getting one, and I'd like to know why this is a different grade of steel than their other fine knives. Anyone know? All comments appreciated.

interfectus, VG-10 is a great steel. In my opinion it is better than either ATS-34/55. The Calypso Jr. is a really good knife and great cutter. Welcome to the forums...

Most people consider VG-10 superior to the ATS-55. In fact, one of Spyderco's "upgrades" to the Delica and Endura is changing to VG-10 steel.

VG-10 is an upgrade from most stainless cutlery steels IMO. It's that good.

Just FYI, ATS-55 and ATS-34 are stainless steels, too. "Stainless" refers to, I /think/, whether there's a certain amount of chromium in the steel makeup.

Now, as to the specifics of your question: my EDC is two Calypso Jr Ltwt's. I've used VG-10, ATS-55, ATS-34, CPM440V, BG-42, and AUS-8 (I don't think I missed any) -- and the Calypso's are my EDC /because/ they're VG-10. Haven't had any rust problems, /very/ acceptable edge-holding ability. I consider those the two essnetial points of performance, and in both areas, it exceeds ATS-34 and ATS-55.

The one problem I've had with it isn't performance; it's appearance. For some reason, I can't get this steel nice and clean like ATS steels; it smudges pretty badly. Good thing that doesn't matter to me.

Just FYI interfectus, both ATS-34 and ATS-55 are stainless steels (though maybe a little less stainless than VG-10). In my personal experience, VG-10 is superior to both in terms of taking a super-sharp edge, and holding it.

I forgot my razor while attending a wedding out of town and did not know this until the last moment, so I ended up shaving with a LUM folder. The shaving cream stained the blade a bit, just a hint of darker metal 1/4 inch up the blade, no biggie tho. I think its comming out slowly. VG-10 so far has held up great IMO. Lots better than ATS-34.

Are you serious??? Did it irritate your face? Did you sharpen and strop the blade thoroughly before doing this?

BTW - Lum Chinese or Tanto?

Chinese, I keep it really sharp, its my "gettin briars outta my hand" knife, so it hardly ever sees any hard use. I have tough skin, and usually dry shave with a Mach 3, but I used some shaving cream with the knife, just in case. Worked like a gem. The fat belly on the Chinese worked great, better results than I was expecting really.

never knew how much of a difference vg-10 made till today...

I picked up (read: finished paying for) my c52PBK today, and damn is it sharp.

Put me in as another VG-10 fan. Next to BG-42, it's about my favorite stainless steel.

Just think which knives use VG-10 and you'd understand that it is indeed a very high-end steel.

In the Spyderco line: Moran fixed blade, Bardechiansky Shabaria, Howard Viele, Tim Zowada and others, and the guys at Falkniven - that know a thing or two about knives and steel - use it in all of their blades

one of the reaosn I got the calypso jr in the first place was steel selection.

We just made about 40 Chinooks with VG-10. We're testing USA production of this steel. So far, no problems.

Sounds great, Sal!
I'm really looking forward to seeing more models using VG-10. Takes and holds an excellent edge...good stain resistance...resharpens up nicely...what more can you ask?
