VG-10 vs. ATS-34/154CM

I'm looking for a new around the house concealable fixed blade for utility work. I've narrowed the choices to: Spyderco Moran Drop Point, Camillus CQB2, Camillus Talon 154CM. The one I really want is the Talon in Talonite, but it's too much money.

My question is, how is VG-10[Moran] vs the ATS-34/154CM in the others?

Thanks

I've used VG-10 for a couple years now, in my Fallkniven knives mostly. My impression is that VG-10 is less brittle than ATS-34/154CM at the same RC rating. It also seems more stain resistant than ATS-34. Edge holding is fairly similar between the three. A good, relatively small fixed blade in VG-10 is the Fallkniven F-1, but the Moran really rocks too. Overall, I think VG-10 is pretty good stuff.

Exactly what Steelhed said.
VG-10 of the Fallkniven variety is great, not brittle at all but very good in edge holding.

VG-10 comes closer to the edge-holding qualities of a very good high carbon steel such as Carbon V than any other stainless, in my experience. Check out Fallkniven's web page. Sal Glesser of Spyderco noted in this forum a while back, "Our 'Laboratory tests' (CATRA) indicate that VG-10 (properly heat treated) got 32% sharper than ATS-34. Edge retention; VG-10 stays sharper longer by 29% VG-10 after 6 hour "Q" fog was superior to ATS-34 in corrosion resistance by 22% and after 72 hours, by 3 times. hope that helps." This is very, very good stuff. (But I still prefer 52100 over all.)

I'm with Alberta Ed they VG-10 knives hold a edge longer and are sharper than 154cm blades. The Spyderco blades with VG-10 are really something.Far out lasting my 154cm blades.

And another one in favour for VG-10. I have a number "Spydies" featuring this steel and the kind of sharpness on those is incredible. I feel that those knives hold their edges longer than those made of ATS-34.

Not only is VG10 a better edge holder and less brittle than ATS34, it seems to get a scarier, grabby type edge easier. I believe VG10 has some cobalt added to the mix, and that might make the difference.

The Spydie Moran is a keen cutter (besides the good stainless steel). Very good blade profile for light to medium utility tasks.

I also prefer VG10 to ATS-34 or 154CM.
