Hi-

How does VG-10 fit into the grand scheme of blade steels? Basically how would it's overall quality stack up against ATS-34 and 55 or 440C and GIN-1 etc., etc.,

Just curious-

I can't speak from anything but personal experience, but what I can say is that my VG-10 Spyderco Calypso Jr. Lightweight is an especially fine blade. It holds an edge exceptionally well and can be made extremely sharp without too much effort.

I'm curious too to find out how it objectively stacks up against the other steels.

Excellent edge holding and corrosion resistance. Significantly better than ATS-34 in both areas. If you've ever used a Fallkniven A-1, you'll know what I mean. Do a search on VG-10 in the Spyderco forum. Sal is probably one of the most knowlegable regarding this steel.

VG10 should be better than ATS34, ATS55, and the other steels you mentioned. But below BG42 and the CPM steels. VG10 should get sharper than ATS34/55 and should hold it a little longer.

It's not intended as an "economy" steel, so in itself it's quite good.
But: As always, the heat treat is the most important factor (as long as the steels are "good enough"). You can't compare steels if it's done "wrong" on one and "right" on another.

Some Swedish Chrismas traditions:

1. At 3 o'clock on Christmas Eve (Dec 25:th is hardly a
special day here) almost every one watches one hour of Disney
cartoons on the public service TV network, even though it's
been practically no changes in the content the last four
decades. The "highlight" is when the original Swedish
presenter sings along with Benjamin Cricket at the end.

2. Coca Cola usually has around 60% of the market in Sweden,
but around Christmas it drops to about half, as Swedes then
drink "julmust" instead.
