What is different about the VG10 Endura? I’ve heard that in addition to a VG10 blade it has a redesigned tip and steel liners in the handle. What does a “redesigned tip” mean? What are steel liners in the handle? How good is VG10 steel?

Here are some questions that I have about the knife’s performance:
Is the lock strong?
Does the blade have any play when it is opened?
Is it fast to open?
Does the Boyle locking dent make a difference?

Hi Hawker,

Spyderco has been using VG-10 in their Endura for quite a while now, several years anyway.

There is a new Endura4 model that is just hitting the streets. It also uses a VG-10 blade steel, but the model is a complete re-design. All new tooling, all new parts.

What are steel liners in the handle?
Pieces of metal inside the liner that help make the knife stronger. They serve as an inner skin.

How good is VG10 steel?
Very good. In my understanding, it is second to only S30V in terms of widely used stainless steels.

Is the lock strong?
Don't know about the new model, but yes, Enduras have good locks. It's a Spyderco!

Does the blade have any play when it is opened?
It's a Spyderco! Some have play, but these are exceptions.

Is it fast to open?
Lockbacks aren't the smoothest openers.

Does the Boyle locking dent make a difference?
IMO, no, not really. But I've never closed a lockback by accident anyways.

I looked around for the new Endura4. I found one online for $44. However, all of the Endura4's have a partially serrated blade. Do they make a plain bladed Endura4?

Hi Hawker, yes, PE is available.

After I got my Delica and Native, I think I'll have to get an Endura soon too. I think it's great that Sal posts here. How often do you get an answer from the owner of a company? His posting here shows how much he and his company care about the consumers.

Ok, here is the website that I found the $44 Endura 4.

They show a plain edged Endura that is not marked as an Endura4, and a Partially serrated Endura that they do mark as an Endura 4. Did they make a mistake, and are both plain and serrated models Endura4s? Or is only the Partially serrated model an Endura 4?

The pics I saw looked like the old model. Not sure if it's a description mistake or they just don't have the new pictures yet. You can a comparison of the old vs. new Delica here. It's the same as the Endura, only a bit smaller. According to Spyderco, both models will come in plain edge, combo edge, and fully serrated.

You can also download the 2006 Spyderco catalog in .pdf format here. It's got lots of fun stuff in it. :D
