so I received my DOTD M43 today and the markings for make adn kami are vibropeened into teh blade - first time I've seen this. Anyone else got one like this? pics tomorrow.

Oh don't get me wrong - the blade is fantastic. From my informal test with a small file the ehat treat seems ot be about as perfect as one could get by hand, the handle is weell fitted with two very good looking pieces of dark satissal with lots of grain, and the edge on this one came field sharp, and literally with 5 minutes on my stones came out to frighteningly sharp [probably sharper thana khukuri needs to be in truth]. I am totally not dissatisfied in any way. This is the first one I've seen with vibropeen markings though [and perhaps that is why it was a DOTD?] and I was just curious if this was new or if anyone else has seen and/or aquired one like this.

I have an ak bowie from a DOTD thread marked this way. I also have another blade from a DOTD thread though, that was purchased recently, and is not marked this way. Doesn't bother me one bit, just looks different.

looks tacky & unprofesssional. nothing wrong with engraving, but please use proper scribes and cutters, not this. better still, stick with striking them into the blade.

To HI kamis... Please throw away that machine.

Engraving=classy

Vibropeen=trashy

I'd rather have an unmarked blade that the have one marked like that.

These are about quality of production and not volume. If prices need to come up a bit, so be it.

I talked to Auntie about this.
The kami's were trying a new marking method to try to save some time.
We will not be marking them using an electric engraving pen any more and will continue to mark them as we have been by chisel.

Thanks Karda and Yangdu.

That's customer service. See a problem, address it and correct it.

I love Himalayan Imports.

Yeah, hate to say it, but the vibropeen markings don't look so hot. Unfortunately, the kukri I bought as a gift has the vibropeen signature on it. :( poo.

Naw... the signature being vibropeened is a bummer, but the kukri is otherwise awesome! I don't think the receiver will care all that much since he's never seen one of these before (and it's probably going to get heavy use). I'll just have to get him another one at a later date when the kamis go back to engraving/chiseling.

I just received a DOD CAK with a vibropeen marking, and that's the only bad thing about it. Still, kinda sad, the real etched signatures really give the blades character and some life... thankfully the ASTK that I also received had a fully etched sig on it

I have a feeling that the CAK that I just got and was shipped yesterday will also have vibropeen sigs. Kinda sad, since it's my first Khukuri ever. Oh well I guess I can always buy more. :rolleyes:

Just see what you think about when you get it. If it bothers you, and it would bother me honestly if it were my first khuk, just let Yangdu know and arrange an exchange. As someone who uses every khuk/knife I get from HI, I wouldn't mind it. It wouldn't be my first choice, but I'm OK with it if I receive one with the ol' vibropen.

oh my... I didnt mean to cause a stir - I'm not complaining, it was just new to me and I was curious if anyone had seen it before. While I do admit I like the chiseled in markings better, for DOTD and villager knives I think this would be acceptable, and on my particular m43 the blade is awesome and I would not and will not send it back for something so cosmetic - the blade is just too good!

I'm glad you're happy with your blade and don't mind the vibropeen.

Just to be clear, a DOTD or villager knife does not mean there is anything wrong with the item. It might be overstock or perhaps a nonstandard length or weight, or maybe a model that is not listed at the HI web site store. Unless it is sold as a "blem" there should be nothing wrong with it, even cosmetically. (Villagers don't have the polished finish, but they are not blems unless sold as such. Even the inexpensive KLVUKs, which have almost no finish except for the edges, are not blems.)

In this case the problem is not just that the lettering is vibropeen, but it is sloppy vibropeen. It probably takes a lot of practice to do a clean job with that tool, and even then it would not be as good as the usual HI engraving.

I'd say it's borderline. Some people would be bothered by it enough to consider it a blem, others wouldn't give it a second thought. If you got a good price and don't really care about the cosmetic issue, then it's a win-win. I'm glad that Karda announced that HI will not be continuing with the vibropeen method.

Personally I don't like it. As mentioned it was a super deal or your buying strictly for a chopper that will be unloved and abused without regret, it's probably ok.

I so far don't have the ability to unlove one of these beautiful things. I'll use it but it will be pampered afterwards.

I think it's the heritage and the history that would bug me. I'm glad they will not do it. Just my humble opinion of course.
