Vic: 111mm Soldier OR Swisstool Spirit S?

I recently got a 111mm Vic Soldier to carry on the belt, and I love the extra things it adds to my daily "arsenal": one-hand opening, nice long wood saw, and a good phillips screwdriver. I also carry a Vic Electrician and a Wenger Esquire which covers the regular and small knife blade, awl, screwdriver, scissors, and toothpick bases.

.......... But, now I'm wondering if I need a Multi-tool. I know I'd only wear one belt pouch, which means I'd have to choose between the Soldier and the Multi-tool.

Anyway, I realize this question almost totally depends on your lifestyle, and what challenges or problems you are likely to face during the course of the day, but IF you could only carry one, which would you choose?

BTW, I'm thinking of a Swisstool Spirit S - it just looks so freaking cool!!! And, man, pliers would be handy, but then the wood saw is shorter, and no one-hand opening, but the metal saw/file would be awesome, and that little chisel looks like it would be nice to have, but ..... and .....!!!!!:D HELP!!! :D

why not a leatherman surge? it covers all of your tools and has one hand opening.

I just got a spirit X and i'm very happy with it, one handed opening blades are not something i need in a tool because i always have a knife on me, either fixed blade or one hand opening folder. The swiss spirit is probably going to be lighter than your 3 SAKs as well. I do also own the new soldier, it's very bulky and i don't like carrying it so i keep it in my car.

Are you planning on carrying the other two SAKs if you get the spirit?

I was planning on carrying the other two also. May have to re-think that; could possibly drop the Electrician if I get a multi-tool. I guess I'm still trying to work out the best combination for me.

I'll check out the LM Surge, too. Thanks! I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to researching or thinking about multi-tools, but from what I've read around here, I think a Vic multi-tool would suit my preferences best. Still thinking & learning, though!

LOL ...... probably exactly what I'll do! :D

BTW, I just noticed you are the author of a thread that got me thinking about the Spirit! ;)

I usually carry a Soldier or a Camper with a EDC knife. Quite never needed a Multi-tool with pliers.

What to do, What to do????? Man I know the feeling. I have at least 30 SAKs of all types and I do love everyone of them. I also have 3 Leatherman Multitools. The Wave, and 2 Blast. After years of trying to figure out which is best for me, it has come down the this. I carry the Leatherman Blast on my right side and I have a Buck Vantage Select ( small) clipped to my left pocket. This is because I dont like carrying a lot of weight on me and the Blast suits my needs. It has the things I want most, Like a saw, blade, scissors, and file, phillips and flat head screw drivers, can opener and its not heavy to carry. The Wave is the one I like the best but I keep it in my truck because of the weight. I have to toss it up to carrying the Blast or the Swiss champ. I carry mostly the Blast but some times I carry the Swiss champ. I think the Champ is a little heavier. I may be wrong. Thats what I carry and why. It works for me. The one thing that the Blast does not have and I wish it did, is an awl. Other than that, its good enough.

As Kidd put it. MT users trying to limit their EDC have to decide are they primarily a knife user or a plier user? There are great tools based on both but the crossover isn't the best. Most plier-based tools have at least one knife blade but if you use a knife a lot then they are a compromise. OTOH, some SAKs and other knifes have pliers as well. While some are better than others, few reach the level of usefulness of a say a Leatherman Kick even.

For me, I am a knife guy and don't need to EDC pliers. That is why a 111mm SAK has been my EDC since 1991. (I'm on my 3rd. 1st two were Rucks and now I have the Hunter).

It seems the most common solution is plier based multi on the belt and a dedicated blade carried as well.

No need to drop the Electrician: I carry a Leatherman Wave for the "heavy" work (it also features one hand opening for the plain and serrated blades) and the electrician is reserved for food and lighter tasks.

IMHO a good multitool pairs quite well with a good SAK.
