Vic: Combo lifter-opener, vs. dedicated

There's a combo tool that's supposed to act as a lifter AND can-opener, such as on the Waiter model. I know it works well on caps, but can it still open a can decently? I wouldn't expect it to be as efficient as the blade and point of the dedicated can opener.

I recently got a Vic Bantam w/the combi-tool. IMO, it's slower and less intuitive for opening cans than the standard can opener. Although I haven't used it extensively yet, I have found it doesn't cut as cleanly, especially as I'm approaching the end of the task. Also, unlike the standard opener, the combi-tool has no sharpened area, which makes it a bit more awkward. It will get the job done, though.

Not as good as the regular canopener but still it works fine. I wish some multitools would adopt the combo tool seeing as how you don't have a lot of space in a multitool and a separate canopener and bottleopener seems excessive. The combo tool is fine enough that if i ever get my custom sak built i'll forgo the canopener and bottleopener layer completely and just add a combo tool to the blade layer. I'm thinking a 3 layer sak with the functionality of a 4 layer Huntsman. Further mod would be adding a pliers layer and maybe a file layer.

That could either be a Compact + saw for celidor models or a Lumberjack + scissors for alox.
IMHO it is a great combination of tools and light weight.

Same experience with Victorinox combo tool: not as efficient as the dedicated can opener, but it works. Ditto for the Wenger combo tool, which looks like something from Klingon martial arts.

I have a Vic bantam with the combo tool and to tell you the truth the combo tool works good not great.

I have always used and preferred the leatherman/wenger style of can opener. But I will say that Vic combo tool does not cut as well as the hawk bill/hook style. I think if the flat on the Vic tool was sharpened it would work a lot better.

If I could have my way on designing a SAK it would have a combo tool that was sharpened on the flat vs a entire wasted layer of 2 dedicated tools.

That's exactly why I asked. Silly me, this a/m, I recalled that my GAK Sak has the combo tool. Promptly tried it out on two cans of hash. It's just fine. Makes a wider puncture than the bladed one, requiring a bit more effort, but same technique. I'm thinking a 3-layer Alox, too. Electrical/Pruner blade opposite the awl, scissors, and the combo opposite a magnifier. This would handle my top Sak duties of fingernail maintenance, helping my aging eyes, and small-blade tasks.

Honestly I think it works fine... it gets the job done, is a grand piece of design, IMO.
