Vic Manager pen won't stay out

I have a Vixtorinox Manager that I've had for 5 years. The retractable pen will no longer stay out, so that I can write with it. The grey plastic thing that holds it, no longer pops out to the side to hold it in place while writing.

Does anyone have a fix for that? Or, do I need to send it in to Vixtorinox?

If I get a new one, is there anything I can do, to prevent this from happening again?

My guess would be there’s gunk stuck between the scale and the grey piece preventing it from locking into place. A less likely cause is that the grey plastic had lost its “spring” I say less likely because I use a manager daily and have not seen this issue personally. I would extend the pen grab ahold of it and pull it out (you won’t break it) then flush the knife with warm soapy water also work the grey piece back and forth and see if it frees up. Here’s a pic with the scale removed so you can see what you’re working with.
