I went to amazon.com and they had a short little article about amazon's "rage free" wrap.

All I could think was  . This is why we have pocket knives people. There would be no need for this is everyone just realized the usefulness of carrying a blade.

Hate to admit it, but I have a hard time with certain packages even with a blade. :grumpy:

even with my assortment of pointy sharpies, i still often manage to slice open those packages...put away my knife and then promptly slice my hand open on razor sharp plastic...it has happened many times. I am NOT a fan of that clamshell plastic. but that being said i do enjoy watching my friends struggle with the packaging until finally almost giving up and then i will offer my blade and make short work of it.

Those packages are mean, and they are potentially dangerous (lot's of people have injured themselves by trying to open them with knives and blades). Scissors have hard time trying to chew through them.

So what if they offer pain free packages? Does it make more sense to package them as annoyingly as possible?

those clamshell packages dont deter theft either, when i worked at circuit city people would just slice them open with razor blades and take whatever was in the package

There would be no need for this insane packaging if people didnt steal stuff.

Plastic clam-shell packaging is a great example of why dull knives can be more dangerous than sharp ones. every time I see someone trying to force a dull knife through those thick seams in the plastic I take several steps back :D on the other hand any decently sharp pocketknife will open them with minimum effort in my experience. people always seem genuinely shocked when I open them without a struggle. then they ask me to sharpen their cheap POS dollar store knives for them, go figure

edit: for those of you who hate this type of packaging, try to cut just inside the seams and remove the seams from all sides but one, this has worked well for me and leaves the last side to function as a hinge so you can put the contents back in if you need to.

As a dad with two little kids, I can say I absolutely despise the packaging that the toys com in now. Every Christmas, I have to have a tool box of wire cutters, screwdrivers and an assortment of blades just to get the toys free of their plastic prison. I HATE IT. Who puts that crap in there? Is a man? Is a machine? Is it Satan? I definitely have wrap rage!

This is the PC solution - even the sheeple don't get intimidated by one

They don't work the blade doesn't stick out far enough to cut through the paper perfectly ( I have one if your press hard enough it'll go through).
It'll cut yes, but they made the blade way to small rendering it useless it's a fridge magnet in my house :P. My vantage is my box opener (if I could find it).

I've been using them for over 20 years so either you've got a dud or you're not using it properly. It won't cut properly if you tilt it up - you have to hold the flat section flat against the paper and if you press as hard as you imply it will go thru several 80gsm sheets and score the table below. Hold it flat and press with the right amount of pressure and it will cut thru the top sheet only. I also use it to score and snap thick clamshell plastic and it will even score glass.

But hey, who needs rules?

Only in this country do people complain about the packaging on their wretched excess.

So, what is a good way to open those big meanie plastic clamshell containers that restrain me from my new bauble?

Quality kitchen shears make short work of any plastic clamshell packaging.

Yes Virginia, there are other cutting tools that work better than a knife in certain applications.

It is amazing what you can do if you think out of the box.

Amazon can get rid of clamshell packaging for one simple reason:

You can't shoplift from a website.

Truth ahoy!

FWIW, I hate the wire-tie thingies much worse than clampacks. With a clampack, all you need is a knife. With those obnoxious wire ties, you need either a pair of wire cutters, or a lot more patience than I posess. :thumbdn:

Even with a sharp blade, some of that plastic packaging makes me furious....so much so that I often want to reach for some fire-starting equipment:D:D
