Victorian Kuk

Are you sure that its Victorian? In my experience what I see there definately is not...

To me it looks like a whole bunch of crazy characters..... :D :D :D ( I have a viewing problem )

I get another IE browser window when I click on a link, John. Which browser/version are you using?

Nice.

Although the grip region has become a bit fuzzy from age.

Thanks ddean.......Hope that helps, john

The tang was the really interesting part I found....don't see too many tangs split three ways....

I wonder if the 2 outside ones are peened

or nails to keep the pommel cap from turning 'off round'.

Which is a useful idea itself.

Pretty sure it's peened.....

Nails to me would indicate after fabrication and after the pommel had loosened over time. It's really tight....The heads would also be a little flatter than a peen . The coloration also seems uniform.....

but it is a useful idea

Nice Kuk, ;)

Nails would be a time saving shortcut by a kami, That kukri doesnt look to me like it was made with time saving bieng a requirment of its manufacture.

Thanks for sharing,

Spiral

Sorry about the fuzzy handle pic....camera not the most expensive.

Thanks TL & Spiral, I'm real happy with it.....just something about the old ones. Even the old scabbards have a great feel to them. Just finished with a light cleaning and will be placing it next to the old villager. :p

I'm pretty sure they're nails or similar with rounded heads. It would be impossible to get that wide of a tang through the handle.
Think about it.;)

Yvsa quote,

Actualy Yvsa even if you look at some ww1 kuks you will see the same amount of "impossible" spread on the double tang peenings!

They split the tang & spread it for an added wedging effect!, Thats where the strength comes from!

If you want photos to illustrate, expect I can find a few! :D

Yea, I hadn't thought of that; :o would like to see pix anyway.:p :D

Again, sorry about the fuzzy pic but the pommel is a bit deceptive. In hand the two peens are not symetrical at all......in fact they are displaced like a peen would be. Part of the pommel cap does show the peen hole just off a hair as if the split tang may have been off a bit when aligning......still doesn't detract from it's solid feel & appearance. Wonder if the anthro. lab would do an xray for me?

Yvsa been looking through literaly thousands of collected kuk pix & cant find the busted bone handle with revealed split tang ,I know I took copied about 18 months 2 years back.

I should have indexed the pix as I went ,) O well live & learn! {again :rolleyes: }

Best I could do is show a wide double split on a kothi type pommel for the fourth gurkha rifles.

is that good enough?

Have sent some pics to Spiral,Yvsa and Nasty ref. a possible split tang variant. I am having problems posting pics (as usual)
