The multi tool forum gave me an error message stating that I didn't have "enough permission" to start a new post there, so I'm posting my question here. I'm thinking of getting a black alox Pioneer. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how the colored alox holds up in the pocket riding with keys, loose change, etc. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

My experience has been that it will show quite a bit of wear. I have a red Alox Farmer that has a lot of silver showing through.

i have the very one in question and several more.i only buy alox SAKs, anyway, they will wear in the pocket with other metal objects.

Silver alox is excellent at hiding pocket wear and it is my scale of choice. I have a small AAA flashlight on my keychain and opted for a silver finish for the same reason. Just looks a little less ratty if I have to put on a suit, I guess.

But I do think a well-used, long carried coloured alox SAK looks fantastic with loads of character...:cool:

If you want to maintain the scale color on alox, you will need to keep it in sheath/pouch. Case makes a very inexpensive suade pouch. For the pioneer get a Case Large Slip Pouch 9068. They are so cheap it it best to buy them in multiples, and they will not fall out of your pocket.

Here's a old red pioneer with brass liners.

Here's my Alox Classic SD that's been riding on my keyring for the last 2-3 years. I've carried a silver Alox Pioneer as well, but that doesn't show any wear. Close inspection will show scratches, but there is no anodizing to wear on that one.

Agree. If you're buying the alox new just get a slipcover and you won't have to worry about it. They're great.

I have some of those offered at Knives Ship Free and like them a lot.

If you're interested, I made a post about slipcovers on this thread:

I keep my copper pioneer in my watch pocket by itself so I cannot comment on wear while carrying.

However, I have bumped it against a few things while using it and dropped it once or twice without a mark.
