I don't know where to post this so I'll put it here. Here's something you don't hear about hardly ever. A fellow teacher has the Cadet 2, I have the regular model, but we were talking & it turns out he was in the Marines in Gulf 1. Any way he said that the 2 most common knives he saw in the middle east was the Wenger SI, & the Cadet 2. When I asked if this was a Marine thing, he said no it was a Foreign Legion thing.. It was a 50/50 split between them.
He did say that he got his in trade (even-steven) for his mil-k. He also said the SAK was 1000x lighter than his mil-k (which I don't even know what that is:foot::o), and that it is also a better quality product. The springs he said always had issues on his old mil-k.
Anyone know what he's talking about (the mil-k)?

He was talking about the all steel scout type knife the military has. Very similar in looks to the Wenger SI, but only half the quality and half again more weight. For the last 20 years that I know of, they were made by Camillus, and they were not very good knives. The crewdriver/bottle opener was a thumbnail buster, and it did indeed have issue with the springs breaking.

He made a good move to get rid of it for a sak.

Yes and Case makes them as well, not near the quality of a Vic soldier or Wenger SI imho.

It's hard to beat he real thing ;)

While I agree that the Vic Soldier and Wenger SI are better knives, I still miss my "demo knife" that got lost over the side (no lanyard).

Not knowing too much about them, the can-opener (my favorite tool) on the Case looks like it works better (or at least like a p-38). Or am I just halucinating?

My preference is the Victorinox can opener. They work differently. With the Vic, you cut forward (meaning the can rotates clockwise) and with the older demo/Scout-style can opener, you cut backwards (meaning the can rotates counter-clockwise). It could be that I've just come to prefer the Vic style because I've used it so much more - and the reason for that is that extra little screwdriver tip it sports. That sucker's indispensible, IMHO.

Yep, indispensible alright. For opening "cocktail-fruit" & who knows what. I'm a lefty, so it turns out I was going backward w/ my 2 vics.::op

i think the little screwdriver is what he means is indispensible. it works on a lot of Phillips screws as well

i do like the action of the other type of can opener though, like the Vic combo tool. the screwdriver isn't as nice to use though

I have the Wenger, and I STILL want the Demo knife. I know the Vics and Wengers are much better, but.... I don't know, I guess it's the fact that I don't have one, you know? Plus I love the belly on the blade. Looks like a good slicer. I wonder if the Cases were as bad as the Camillus, at least as far as the back springs breaking and what not. Does Case still make them?

I bought mine a couple years ago at smkw, not sure if they still make them or not.

jpvjr, yea the can opener on the case looks vicious lol but for me at least the Vic pattern is the easiest to use, the one on the demo knives seems to get stuck or wedged between the lid and the can if your not carefull.

I am 99.99% sure that the Case version was made on contract by Camillus for Case, and was a limited production item (not in the regular Case catalog). Case had several "standard" patterns (scout knife, hawkbill, and electrician) that I was 99% sure were made by Camillus....sure enough they all disappeared from the Case line when Camillus went under.
