I currently have a Victorinox Pioneer with silver Alox handles. I like it because it has most of the tools I want and is somewhat slim for my pocket. I like the fact that the Farmer has the saw and was wondering if it is much thicker or about the same as the Pioneer. Thanks.

Add at most 1/8" , not really significant . My larger mitts prefer the thicker handle . If i wore dress clothes more than twice a year , I might think different .

Thanks for the info! I have been looking for one on the secondary market and can't seem to find one that isn't silver. Silver is fine, but I would like to have a red, blue, or orange one.

Farmers in blue or red are in high demand, and are spendy when you find them. I have at least 8 in those colors, but being a knife hoarder I cannot help you out. :) But if you are willing to pay, they can be found.

I personally like the farmer much better myself due to it having the saw. If your willing to pay a high price you can find the blue or red farmers at time. I'm going to leave you a few links on your visitor message page. Ash

Thanks! I'll order a couple if I can find them in stock.

Powernoodle, those are some mighty fine pieces in your collection. Thank you for the information. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with silver, but those other colors are so attractive.

Silver does show less wear, but I too prefer the colors and like a knife with lots of wear on it.

The red Farmer is absolutely class and beauty—when it's new. Carry it and use it at all, and it very quickly starts showing scars and character. If you find a red one on that auction site, expect to pay $50+ for NIB. If you're going to use it and carry it, may as well get one that comes pre-scratched.

BTW, the Farmer is 1/2 inch thick.

Those colored alox knives are beautiful. A bit hard to get, at least here in Europe, but I fortunately found a few to add to the collection and a red Pioneer is in my EDC rotation.

Like others said, the Farmer is just a little bit thicker than the Pioneer. The saw on the Victorinox knives is great, I use it often for cutting small wood for a fire, cutting branches in the garden and such things. Also, since it's a bit thicker, for me it's a bit more comfortable in the hand.

I have an old red pioneer with old style cross. I find it to by THE perfect edc sak. I tried the farmer and found it to be a little too heavy for my pocket. Also I found that the saw made it a bit difficult to get the blades knife nick... but then again this is just my opinion.

i have the farmer, i also found the blade nick 'problem', and the ring that was digging in my palm, as compared to my trusty old alox soldier.
anyway, after a few months of carry and use, i didn't notice those things anymore, but the farmer is a bit heavier and bulkier, and some like that extra heft in the handle.. me, though i very much like the farmer, still prefer the old soldier/pioneer for edc, and sometimes, when i want to travel light, the very thin solo, pictured bellow with the farmer.
Having the saw, the farmer still excels at outdoor/camping activities, making cutting of sticks/small branches an easy job in a small yet sturdy package

Great idea , you loose fewer that way , much easier to retrieve from the pocket too ! Lanyards are a must around snow or water .

For EDC I normally don't use a lanyard. But when I go hiking/camping/canoeing, I attach my SAK to my belt by using a piece of paracord and a carabiner.
